Feeling Off Balance? It Could Be Peripheral Neuropathy

Feeling Off Balance? It Could Be Peripheral Neuropathy

The human body has an astounding capacity to send out warning signals when something is amiss. Listening to those warnings is essential if you notice changes in your balance. If you live in Canton, Stow, or Rittman, Ohio, help is available through the care of Aaron Chokan, DPM, Kristina Minniti, DPM, and the rest of the team at Ohio Foot and Ankle Center

What is peripheral neuropathy?

Your brain and spinal cord are considered your central nervous system. The nerves that carry signals from your brain throughout the rest of your body are called peripheral nerves. Peripheral neuropathy develops when one or more of these nerves is damaged.

Damaged nerves cannot correctly transmit sensory information to or from your brain. This creates a wide range of sensory abnormalities. Some of the signs of peripheral neuropathy in the ankles and feet include:

Problems with coordination and balance are also signs of peripheral neuropathy. If you notice yourself feeling like you’re reeling when you stand or walk, or if you begin to stumble or trip more than usual, consider contacting Ohio Foot and Ankle Center for a diagnostic workup.

Why seek treatment for peripheral neuropathy?

Your peripheral nervous system plays several essential roles in your overall health and wellness. Balance issues can increase your risk of trips and falls, and a serious accident can limit mobility. Older adults who sustain serious falls and/or broken bones could require around-the-clock nursing care.

However, balance issues are not the only problems arising from nerve damage in the feet and ankles. If you cannot process sensory data, you could sustain damage to your feet and not even know it. This is a common problem for people with diabetes, who need special foot care due to the risks of neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy, especially balance issues, can prevent you from getting enough physical activity daily. This can cause a cascade of negative health issues that extend far beyond your feet and ankles.

When is the right time to seek help with balance issues?

No one knows your body better than you do. If you sense that something is just not right, don’t hesitate to contact Ohio Foot and Ankle Center to schedule a visit. We are here to help and offer state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to get to the bottom of your symptoms.
